Classical Music Sundays- Finlandia: Jean Sibelius

Unfortunately, Jean Sibelius is not as highly considered by modern composers as he really should be. Finlandia is a great example of his powerful composing. Although his music does not embody modernist tendencies or an overt experimentalism, Sibelius was able to write music that resonates within us and is inspiring in its delicacy and power. Here is one of my favorite Sibelius pieces, the tone poem used as an inspirational piece for the Finnish people. Most people are familiar with the last movement, which is used for a variety of Christian hymns, including the beautiful Be Still My Soul. Although that part is the most popular motif from Finlandia the rest of the piece is well worth discovering.
