My body is ready. Usually I’m not a fan of making things darker just for the sake of making them darker but this trailer works for me. That’s because the grittyness makes sense in the universe. The battle against the Empire is violent and dark on the ground. And they have nailed the aesthetic. I’m just waiting for the mouth breathers who complained that TFA was too much like A New Hope to complain that this is too different from the original movies.
Here are 19 awesome things from the trailer.
Felicity Jones’s character Jyn.
Rebel base at Yavin. Look, it’s a sweet old school X-wing!
Genevieve O’Reilly is back playing Mon Mothma. She played this character in Revenge of the Sith but got cut from the final film. You can see her role in the deleted scenes. I’m happy to see her getting a chance in this new movie.
Nice practical effects, keeping with the TFA ideology.
Star Wars nerds look, it’s an Imperial-I class Star Destroyer. Older than the Imperial II class that we see in the OT. Nice little nod to the EU.
THIS SHOT IS AMAZING. Also I think it’s funny that for the first Death Star they installed the gun last, but in for the second one they installed it first. They learned the lesson.
Old school X-wing pilots. Rebel Legion, get on this.
Ben Mendelsohn’s character. This is the Death Star bridge that we saw in ANH, it has the same readouts, but I don’t think this is Tarkin. Probably a different commander.
The hover tank that we have heard so much about on Reddit.
Forrest Whitaker with his sweet cane.
New stormtroopers. They look like they are taking influence from the Shadow Troopers of the EU.
These pilots are going to get a taste of the IT-O droid. But I like the grit of this shot.
We see Alan Tudyk’s character, the Enforcer Droid, here.
New Scarab Troopers.
I just like this shot.
Donnie Yen as the samurai dude. I can’t wait to see this. (Also I know that there are multiple Asians in the galaxy, but I want to believe that this is the start of Kanjiklub.)
Who is in the bacta tank? Who’s back is to us? Also notice the old school Imperial guards on the side.
Supposedly these are prototype AT-AT walkers. Notice how this shot calls back to the concept art from ESB.
Our Imperial infiltrator. If you listen closely you can hear Darth Vader breathing in the background.
So there it is, the first trailer. The big question for me is: Where is Mads Mikkelsen?!
